This is something I wanted to try for some time now – when I came to Japan one of the things I did was studying the way Japanese comics are made and also tried to make some by myself. I love the traditional methods – ink and pen on paper and manually pasted raster sheets but somehow over time, I moved to something I felt more at ease with – painting digitally and in color.
From time to time though my love for the manga medium is rekindled and I start to crave the experience – this time it was caused by us (me and Kana) visiting the “JOJO” comic exhibition where we were able to see a lot of original pages from the detailed and dynamic, long-running hit.
On our way back from the exhibition we just had to hit the art supplies store and restock out manga tools with new pen nibs, ink and raster sheets. (While pen and ink are still really popular in Japan and new tools are appearing the manually pasted raster tone sheets seem to be slowly disappearing).
I also wanted to draw a scene similar to those seen in one of my favorite Japanese comics “Yotsuba And” so decided to draw us walking outside. I made the scene up based on some reference photos I had in my collection combining them together into something more interesting.
Tools used:
* Sketch: 0.5mm mechanical pencil with blue leads
* Lines: Pilot black drawing ink
* Lines: Saji-pen
* Raster effects: Deleter brand raster sheets
